(sqrt(5x))^2 = 5 and not 5x, why

I would think that it actually *is* 5x. If you start with √5x and you square that quantity, √5x^2 is the same thing as √5x * √5x. That would simplify to √25x^2, and the square roots of 25 and x^2 are 5 and x, so you'd be left with 5x.I wouldn't know who told you it was 5, but I definitely do not agree.
