any number to the zeroth power is = to 1. you can think of this (except for 0 to the zeroth power) as taking higher and higher roots of a number until the root gets very large...and this will always approach 1. example: 2^0 =1; think of 2^0.5 = 1.414..., 2^0.25 = 1.189, 2^0.1 = 1.07177.. as you can see you're heading towards 1 pretty fast. This also works for negative numbers. Now, the proof that 0^0 = 1 is much more involved and won't be covered here...just take it as a definition for now.
