The idea is that every organism gets a "Genus" name and a species name.  The genus indicates a more general group that the particular species belongs to.  For example, tigers belong to the genus Panthera, so their proper name is "Panthera tigris" (it's italicized since it's in latin).  Other members of the Pathera genus include Lions, Jaguars, and Leopards.
