When you expaned the denominator...I thought multiplication became addition so why did it become subtraction?  Thanks!

Because (-) sign in front of the whole thing: - [log x( root cube to the 4) + log y(squared)] .. he is doing a shortcut by distributing the (-) though .. hope it helps.
