Let x = one of the pieces Let (12 - x) = the other piece. x = twice* (12 - x) Let twice = 2 x = 2(12 - x) x = 24 - 2x x + 2x = 24 3x = 24 x = 24/3 x = 8 We know that one of the pieces is 8 feet. Then 12 - 8 = 4 feet, the other piece. NOTICE: 8 feet is twice 4 feet.
