To answer this, you should find out how much "room" (i.e., what fraction of the room) Jessica / Lily can paint in 1 hour. In one hour, Jessica will be able to paint 1/14 of the room; Lily should be able to paint 1/10 of the room. The concept is fine but the equation is wrong, let X equal to how long it take for the two to paint the room together, it should be X/10 +X/14 = 1 get lowest common denominator(70 here) and add so you will have: 5X/70 + 7X/70 = 1 12X/70= 1 Solve it like a proportion, then X=5.833 hours.
