A coefficient is the number next to a variable.  For example: Given the terms 30x^2 and 50w^(1/2), write the coefficients. The coefficients are 30 and 50.

The number that multiplies with the variable.

A coefficient is the number in front of a variable, indicating multiplication. In the case of x by itself, the coefficient is 1, literally because there is 1 of them. It is not written because, by definition, any number times 1 is the number. So there's no need for it.In other words, 1x = 1*x = x.
