In the problem: "Find f(-5) if f(x)=[x+1]" My math program lists x=4 but isn't the answer -4?  Or am I missing something?

Assuming that the brackets in your problem are absolute value, that's what changes the answer. f(-5) = |-5+1|         = |-4|         = 4 The absolute value of the solution will always be positive because absolute value represents the distance of a number away from 0 on a number line. In this case, -4 is 4 spaces away from 0.
