if a board 30 ft long is cut into 2 pieces and the ratio of the lengths of the 2 pieces is 2:3. what is the length, to the nearest foot, of the shorter piece? i don't get how to calculate this

Imagine the board being cut up into 5 pieces, because 2+3 equals 5. Thus each piece is 6 feet long because 30/5=6. Then, since the ratio is in 2:3, and each 1 piece of the ratio is worth 6, the board becomes into the ratio 12:18.
