When you did 6x multiplied by 6x, wouldn't it become just 36x instead of 36x squared?

The way to think about 6x times 6x is 6 times x times 6 times x. When you multiply the sixes together you get 36. When you multiply the x'es together you get x squared. So your answer is 36x^2 (36x squared).

Rather than thinking about it like 6x times 6x, Think about it like 6 times x times 6 times x.  The only time it wouldn't be 36x squared is when you are adding the terms and not multiplying them.

Even though it's not shown (because it's redundant), x is technically raised to the first power. So 6x * 6x can be seen as 6x^1 * 6x^1 We know that 6*6 is 36 and when multiplying you add exponents, which means x^1*x^1= x^1+1= x^2. That's how we get 36x^2.
