they help make something new as well as giving up valence electrons. For example, sodium has 11 electrons and chlorine has 17 electrons. So sodium has 1 valence electron and chlorine has 7 valence electrons. The objective is that sodium and chlorine need 8 valence electrons so sodium gives it 1 valence electron to chlorine and now they both have 8 valence electrons in their outermost shell and then bond and form sodium chloride also known as tablesalt, so ionic bonds are very essential, but not everything depends on ionic bonds, there are also covalent bonds, polar bonds, metallic bonds and hydrogen bonds.
