why do we have to take the PSAT's?

the PSAT is not a requirement, it is optional. You should check out the PSAT videos. They are all FREE! It has all the necessary info you need to know about the PSAT.

its good prep for the sats

PSAT is the important first step toward your college. in my school, about 200 people took them, and even if you did bad, you know where to work on the SAT later. so is the same with Plan test, which is the pre for the ACT. and if you are a junior in high school, and you did super well on the PSAT, for example, you get 2290, then you may qualify for the National Merit Scholar! this means you are basically accepted by the Top Private Schools like the Ivy League. 

you do not HAVE to, but it's good to, because it helps to prepare for the SAT

it is just practice

It's not required, but it is good practice for the SAT and also you might get a scholarship.

You take the PSAT in order to get a feel for how the SAT is going to be, and to possibly get a scholarship if you do well.
