Let x = the number of quarters.  0.25x is the value of the quarters 2x is the number of dimes and 0.2x is the value of the dimes x+ 5 = the number of nickles and .05(x + 5) is the value of the nickles.    Add the values and set equal to the total value. .25x + .2x + 0.05(x + 5) = $2.25 = .5x + 0.25 after expansion and consolidating like terms. Subtract 0.25 both sides 2.00 = 0.5x Divide by 0.5 both sides 4 = x = number of quarters.  x + 5 = number of nickles = 4 + 5 = 9 nickles. There are also 8 dimes Is this $2.25?    8(0.1) + 4 (.25) + 9(0.05) = 0.80 + 1.00 + 0.45 = $2.25    Yep!
