(x + x1/2)1/2 = 3 (rewrite radicals as exponents) x + x1/2 = 9 (square both sides) x1/2 = 9 - x (isolate exponent on left side) x = x2 - 18x + 81 (square both sides) x2 - 19x + 81 = 0 (subtract x from both sides) Use quadratic formula to solve for x:  x = (-b +/- (b2 - 4ac)1/2) / 2a    a = 1; b = -19; c = 81
