Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring - Problem 9 789 views

Factoring by grouping is a technique that can sometimes be used when you're factoring a polynomial with four terms. To check if factoring by grouping will work, the product of the first and last terms must equal the product of the middle two terms (be sure it's in standard form first!) If grouping will work, draw a vertical line to cut your polynomial into two halves, and then factor each half separately using greatest common factors. If grouping "works," the inside binomials will be the same on both sides. The outside gcf's will become the other binomial factor. FOIL to check your work.
