Jeff's passion for learning started when he was teaching humanities, math, English, and Spanish in public schools in California and Arizona. Additionally, he was on the board of the Coalition of Essential Schools, a leading nationwide school reform non-profit, and most recently served as its president.
Jeff holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stanford University, a Master of Arts in teaching from Brown University, and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. While at Haas, Jeff was president of his class and continues to serve on the development council, as well as acting as an occasional visiting lecturer for the "Speaking as a Leader" class.
Favorite high school teacher: "I had two favorite teachers in high school. Mr. Helgeson, my calculus teacher, wrote notes ambidextrously, and pushed us hard to succeed in front of everyone. If I was confused, he'd declare loudly, 'To the board, Mr. Marshall,' and he and the class would help me work out the problem. Mr. Adkins, my literature of fantasy teacher, encouraged us to 'break the rules' with our ideas, and stretched and provoked us with arguments like, 'Bilbo Baggins cheated in the riddle with Gollum.' Mr. Adkins taught me the delight of thinking in new ways."

Favorite high school teacher: "Mr. Byung Seok Lee, my math teacher in high school. He solved math problems unlike any other teachers or books, focusing on efficient and easier-to-understand methods. He seemed to enjoy solving the problems, as opposed to just focusing on preparing us for tests. Until his class, math was not my favorite subject, and I often struggled with it. With Mr. Lee's help, I started actually enjoying math and ultimately decided to become an engineering major in college."
